In the United States, there are different kinds of farmland. The land is planted with crops in many places. Only in the western part of our country do we have dry rangeland(牧场) where cattle are raised.

But most of Australia’s farmland has a dry climate(气候) similar to our rangeland. Less than 20 inches of rain fall each year. The land does not get enough rain for farmers to grow crops. So Australia raises more sheep than any other country in the world.

In Australia, all large cities are on the coast. The people of Australia call the empty inland regions(地区) of their country the “outback”. In the outback are huge sheep and cattle ranches called “stations”. One station may cover thousands of miles.

The men and women of the outback are like the pioneers who first settled in the American West. Some families live 400 miles from the nearest town.

Arriving home, I suddenly thought of an interesting thing about him in our school days: Tommy hated school and was always looking for excuses not to go. If he sneezed(打喷嚏), he asked his mother to write a note saying he had a cold. If he had a headache, he asked his mother to take him to the doctor during school hours. He spent more time at home than he did at school. When he went to school, he looked for excuses to come home early.

One morning he came home when the lessons were only half finished. His father was surprised. “You’ve come home early,” he said. “Is the school closed today?” “No, Dad, ” Tommy said “It’s open. I came home early.” “How did you do that?” his father asked him angrily. “What did you say to the teacher?” “I told her that I had a new baby brother and I had to come home and help you.”

“But your mother has had twins,” his father said, “a boy and a girl. You’ve got a baby brother and a baby sister.” “Yes, I know, Dad, “ Tommy said. “I’m saving up my baby sister for next week.

Greek soldiers sent messages by turning their shields() toward the sun. The reflected (反射的) light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know its meaning, but other Greek soldiers could understand the messages.

Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voice, important news could be sent quickly over distance.

In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums (). Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at a great speed for hundreds of miles.

In the eighteenth century, a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to different positions. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms.

Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. However, nowadays people can send speech sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds because of the invention of the telephone in America in the nineteenth century.
